The $503 million package includes additional police and resources.
The Government has announced a $503 million Safer Communities package which includes increasing police staff and resources throughout New Zealand.
An additional 1125 police staff, including 880 sworn police officers, will be funded over the next four years to help reduce crime and prevent reoffending.
A new phone number will also be launched for non-urgent police calls. The number will be available from next year, and can be used by people who want to report low-level or historic crime and provide information about suspicious activities.
The package includes an extra $115 million for the Justice and Corrections over four years. This includes $64 million for Corrections’ rehabilitation and reintegration programmes and more staff and $21 million to support District Courts to handle more cases.
