The Government has announced a new Better Public Services target for reducing serious crime.
The Justice Sector targets set in 2012 around reducing re-offending and the rates of crime, violent crime and youth crime will be replaced. The new target is 10,000 fewer victims of serious crimes by the year ending 2021.
The rate of reoffending and the rates of family and sexual violence will also be monitored by supporting measures. Family and sexual violence rates are excluded from the main target as the number of reported offences is expected to increase as reporting rates and detection increases.
“We’re taking an all of government approach to ensure that the things that matter to New Zealanders are achieved. We’re focussing on education, having proper access to health and housing, having fewer victims of crime and making sure that our public services are accessible to all,” said State Services Minister Paula Bennett.
