If you decide to report the crime to the police you'll be kept informed about what's happening with your case. The investigation might take some time. You can contact the police if you have any questions.

If the case goes to court, you might feel a bit nervous and unsure about what to expect. Don't worry, this is normal. You'll be told if you need to go to court and what to do.

You can also talk to a court victim advisor if you want. They'll help you understand what's going on. If you have any concerns, tell the court victim advisor, there's lots of things they can help with.

Sometimes it might feel like the court case is all about the defendant and that you don't have a role at all. But you are really important. You can have a say and tell the court how you feel. You'll get help to do this.

When the court case is over, your rights don't end there. If you weren't at court for the verdict and sentence, someone will contact you and tell you the outcome. You'll also be told if the case needs to go back to court because there's going to be an appeal.

In some more serious cases, you might be able to find out what is happening with the offender after they're sentenced. Things like release dates or parole hearings. You can talk to the police or the court victim advisor about this.
